How many hours per week should students expect to spend on homework?
It is estimated that each component can be completed in 8-14 study hours per week, per course.
How many courses are in the Certificate?
The Certificate requires completion of at least 3 components. The Graduate Certificate in Medical Biochemistry is comprised of 4 components covering the fundamentals of medical biochemistry and delving into the biochemistry of selected diseases. Students are required to take the Biochemistry I: Molecular Structure and Cellular Function and the Biochemistry II: Enzymology and Cellular Metabolism. Students are also required to take one of the remaining 2 components to fulfill the certificate requirements. Students MAY take all four components which can be completed in 2 semesters.

  • Biochem II (4 cr) required
  • Biochem III (3 cr)
  • Biochem IV (3 cr)
How are assignments structured? For example, are students able to complete assignments early or are assignments managed on a weekly basis?
There are certain deadlines that must be met for assignments, quizzes and exams. Generally, a module is designed to be completed during one week’s time. Students can be working on more than one module at a time with the idea that assignment, quiz, and exam deadlines will remain the same as noted in the module.
What is the minimum and maximum # of classes that a student can take in each term?
Biochemistry I: Molecular Structure and Cellular Function must be completed first. The remaining courses may be completed in any order. Biochemistry I and Biochemistry II cannot be taken during the same semester. Successful completion of Biochemistry I (C or above) is a prerequisite for Biochemistry II. Suggested First Term: Biochemistry I and Biochemistry III or IV. Suggested Second Term: Biochemistry II and Biochemistry III or Biochemistry IV.
Will the Certificate say “online”?
No. The Certificate will be a professionally designed paper certificate ready for framing. The UMMC transcript will not indicate ‘online’ for the courses completed by the program participant.
Does the online platform consist of live chats, discussion boards and weekly projects/papers?
Courses are mostly asynchronous. There will be some live chats scheduled. The discussion boards and weekly projects will have definite deadlines as outlined in the modules.
Do the online classes have any group projects that allow for interaction with classmates?
Yes. There will be group projects in each of the courses; however, none of these group projects will comprise a majority of a course grade.
Can students take a leave of absence from the program?
There are provisions for a leave of absence to be granted under certain circumstances. See Leave of Absence Policy for the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences.
Are there any scholarships available for this program?
There are no scholarships available from UMMC for the Certificate Program at this time. However, please check to see if your employer has a tuition reimbursement program. Also, veterans can use their GI bill to pay tuition for the certificate program.
Do you accept transfer credits? How many can I transfer in?
The Certificate Program does not accept transfer credits.
What is the minimum grade that a student can receive?
Successful completion is defined as gaining a ‘C’ or above in any single course. However, students must maintain a ‘B’ average overall to gain the Certificate.
What are the computer requirements (hardware and software) needed to support the online classroom?
Your computer should have these minimum technical standards:

    2. 4GB (gigabytes) memory
    3. 1GB hard drive space
    4. Microsoft Office (at least 2007)
  2. Internet requirements:

    1. A minimum download speed of 1.5 Mbps is required for admission, which is commonly the speed associated with a basic DSL or a cellular/satellite connection.
    2. A faster connection, such as cable or fiber service, will further enhance your online experience.
    3. A Wi-Fi connection is generally acceptable.
  3. Operating system:

    1. You may use either a Windows laptop (Windows 7 minimum; Note Windows 7 Support will be discontinued on December 31, 2018.) or an Apple MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro (OS X minimum)
    2. CPU Processor: 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or greater
    3. Windows 7 and Windows 10. 
    4. Operating System: 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Only genuine, U.S.-English versions of Windows Operating Systems are supported.
    5. Screen Resolution should be at least 1024×768 or higher.
    6. MAC Users: Supported Operating Systems: OS X 10.11 (El Capitan), OS X 10.12 (Sierra), and OS X 10.13 (High Sierra). Only genuine versions of Mac Operating Systems are supported.  CPU: Intel processor.  RAM: 2GB.  Hard Drive: 1GB or higher available space.  Server version of Mac OS X is not supported. Internet connection for Download and Upload.
What are the admission requirements?
Is the GRE required?
No, but it is helpful to you as a graduate student.
What is the accreditation?
The program courses are accredited through Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Is there an on campus requirement?
No. The courses are completely online.
What types of careers can this degree help me to attain?
The Graduate Medical Biochemistry Certificate will enable the successful candidate to better meet the requirements for

  1. Admission into professional schools and graduate schools
  2. A lab technician in the biomedical sciences
  3. Jobs in the biotechnology sector
  4. Teaching certificates in the Biology/Chemistry field
  5. Jobs in biosecurity
Are letters of recommendation required?
No.
Is there a maximum timeframe to complete the program?
Yes. The Certificate Program must be completed within 2 years of the first admission.

Will I need to submit any health records before registering for the courses?
Yes. Students will need to submit proof of immunizations, TB tests results and flu shot records for the current year. A health packet will be sent to the students who have submitted a completed UMMC application.

What is your application fee and how do I pay?
The application fee is $25 and is nonrefundable. Fee can be paid using a valid credit card.
How am I notified of a decision on my application?
You will receive an official letter of notification from the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences regarding a decision on your application.
How do I withdraw from the university?

How do I register for my courses?
Once a student has completed all onboarding requirements, the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences will send instructions on how to register for courses.
